A seismic political shake-up at the Toronto District School Board has produced a more diverse and left-leaning group of trustees, half of them new faces.
It may be that “the chickens have come home to roost’ — there’s a lot of dissatisfaction and anger out there with regards to what has been happening in the school system,” from labour strife to tight budgets, suggested Michael Barrett, president of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, citing large turnover at several boards including Halton and Hamilton.
But at the TDSB, trustees were ousted for a range of reasons, from personal scandal to partisan power plays, leaving 11 of the 22 seats filled by newcomers.
