The 7 Brands that own the beauty industry

Want to know what’s interesting about purchasing a $6 lipstick vs a $40 lipstick? Well, they are owned by the same company. L’Oreal, Johnson & Johnson, Shiseido, Estee Lauder Companies, Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Coty own over 200 beauty brands altogether. It goes without a doubt these conglomerates rule the beauty industry in terms of haircare, makeup and skincare. 

1.L’Oreal

There is a total of 36 brands L’Oreal owns, making them the #1 beauty company in the world. L’Oreal is also one of the first beauty companies to emerge in the industry. For over 110 years they have devoted their energy to creating the best beauty products for men and women. One of the most significant and stand-out attributes of L’Oreal is that their brands come from all cultural origins such as European, Chinese and Korean. They have successfully managed to create and become leaders in the world’s most multicultural brand collection.

Some of the beauty brands L’Oreal owns include Lancôme, Kiehl’s, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Vichy, Yves Saint Laurent and Maybelline New York.

2. Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson owns 9 beauty companies and although they don’t own as many brands as the other conglomerates their name alone speaks for itself. For over 130 years Johnson & Johnson has contributed significantly to the healthcare industry and has pioneered some of history’s biggest healthcare breakthroughs. Their skincare line was in partnership with skincare and dermatologists to ensure their products help maintain skin concerns such as acne and eczema. 

Some of the beauty brands that Johnson & Johnson owns include Aveeno, Clean & Clear, Lubriderm and Neutrogena.

3. Shiseido

Shiseido has quite a history, they started off as Japan’s first Western-style pharmacy which opened in Ginza, Tokyo in 1872. 150 years later their commitment to creating unique products using quality ingredients still remains. Shiseido is a brand that is well-known on its own however, they own over 25 beauty companies. 

Some of the beauty brands that Shiseido owns include NARS, bareMinerals, Dolce&Gabbana, Drunk Elephant, Clé de Peau Beauté and Laura Mercier. 

4. Estee Lauder Companies

First established in the 1940s, Estée Lauder continues to be one of the world’s leading manufacturers in skincare, makeup and fragrance. They are also one of the biggest companies in the prestige beauty industry. Already a successful brand on its own, Estée Lauder owns over 25 brands. 

Some of the beauty brands that Estée Lauder owns include BECCA, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Jo Malone London, La Mer, MAC, Tom Ford Beauty and Too Faced.

5.Unilever

Unilever currently owns over 400 brands and since its establishment over 100 years ago, they are one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies. They are committed to creating beauty products that are not only good for people but for the planet as well. Over 1 billion people use Unilever’s beauty and personal care products every single day.

Some of the beauty brands that Unilever owns include Dove, Lux, Rexona, Ponds and St.Ives.

6. Procter & Gamble

P&G products have taken over shelves at drugstores and for the past 181 years, they have continued to dominate. Some of the most well-known brands at drugstores and big box stores are owned by P&G. Although they only own 9 beauty brands, they are globally known brands. 

Some of the beauty brands that P&G own include Pantene, Olay, Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essences and Secret.

7. Coty

Coty is a world leader when it comes to the beauty industry and they own over 30 brands. Since 1904 Coty’s mission is to cater to all consumers which is why they have two divisions. The first is called Coty Luxury which is focused on luxury skincare and fragrance. The second subdivision is called Coty Consumer which includes a wide variety of beauty products that are known globally. 

Some of the beauty brands that Coty Luxury owns include Burberry, Gucci, Chloe and Marc Jacobs. Brands that are owned under Coty Consumer include Rimmel, Sally Hansen and Cover Girl.
